Art of Changing Mindset.

Depression is a heavy burden that many people carry, often in silence. It can feel hopeless, leading individuals to believe that there is no way out. However, the art of changing one’s mindset offers a glimmer of hope. Studies have shown that adopting a positive mindset can significantly impact mental health. According to the World Health Organization, over 264 million people globally suffer from depression. Yet, with the right tools, transformation is possible.

Changing your mindset involves reframing negative thoughts and actively embracing a more positive outlook. I went through a challenging year in 2024, where everything in my life seemed negative, leading me to develop a negative mindset about myself and my capabilities. To counter this, I began reading positive excerpts from various books and writing them in my diary using colourful pens. Every day, I start with some positive words in my diary. This practice has helped lift me from the weight of negativity.

Next practice, I found myself struggling with procrastination and unable to complete tasks correctly. To address this, I began breaking down my work into smaller sub-tasks with specific timelines. I also adopted the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 25 minutes without any disruptions, taking a 5-minute break, and then repeating the cycle.

Renowned psychologist Martin Seligman, known for his work in positive psychology, emphasizes the importance of cultivating optimism. He states, "Our thoughts are not facts. They are merely our interpretations of events." This insight encourages individuals to challenge their negative thought patterns, fostering a healthier mindset. Similarly, Dr. Carol Dweck’s concept of the "growth mindset" encourages people to see challenges as opportunities for personal development. This approach is particularly vital for those battling depression, as it helps in rewiring thought processes to embrace resilience.

Changing your mindset is quite easy if you start believing in yourself. Jot down every single thought, and practice walking in nature for at least 30 minutes, which improves your condition and clears your mindset of negative thinking. Practicing worship can help a lot, especially when you surrender your negative thoughts to your deity. Before you sleep, always say, 'I can do everything and anything to overcome all the hurdles in my life. This positive affirmation is a great way to end your day on an empowering note.

Good nutrition habits that aid growth in children #63PercentMoreProtein

“Nutrition is the only remedy that can bring full recovery and can be used with any treatment. Remember, food is our best medicine,” said Bernard Jensen.

Everybody knows that nutritious food is good for children for their physical  growth, brain development, immune system, and emotional well-being and nutritious food also prevents any further health issues.

Are you aware that protein has a variety of tasks in the body, making it one of the most important nutrients out there? Protein requirement during the early age of kids is more for their growth and development and the requirement of the protein and other nutrients depend on age and the kind of activities they are doing.

We all know that children's diets are not as healthy as they should be; therefore, we need to inculcate good nutrition habits. Every child needs nutrient-dense food, which is a combination of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein-rich food, dairy food and a limited quantity of added sugar, saturated food, and salt.

This combination of food varies the quantity of each item as per the age and gender like the total calorie intake by the children depends on the age, physical activities, and gender.

Balanced diet for children with good nutrition habits

For the better growth and development of a child, it is important to give them a nutrient-rich balanced diet. Here are some excellent food sources:

1.    Protein-rich foods: As we have discussed above, protein is essential for growth and development so through these sources, protein can be given to a child i.e. eggs, ragi, dairy products (like milk, cheese, yoghurt), beans, chickpeas, nuts and seeds.

2.    Fruits and vegetables: Each fruit and vegetable is enriched with vitamins, minerals, and fibre, so introduce every fruit to the child as per the season.

3.    Whole grains: Whole grains are energy-giving foods like wheat, rice, barley, oats, quinoa etc. Whole grain also improves stamina in a child.

4.    Healthy fats: Healthy fats including DHA, and Omega-3 are also important for brain development and overall health like olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds etc.

5.    Hydration: As we know, our body has a major content of water, so it is important to keep the body hydrated throughout the day and encourage children to drink water as the primary beverage.

From the above sources, a child will get different vitamins, minerals, iron, calcium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates etc. Overall, a balanced diet will improve a child’s mental, and physical development and growth which make him/her a healthy and fit child.

Nutrients that support cognitive function

Proper nutrition plays a significant role in enhancing memory and concentration in children. Here are some key nutrients that contribute to cognitive function:

1. Omega-3 fatty acids: Found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, omega-3s are essential for brain health and can improve memory and concentration.

2. Iron: Adequate iron levels, found in lean meats, beans, and fortified cereals, are crucial for cognitive development and function.

3. B vitamins: B vitamins, particularly B6, B12, and folic acid, play a vital role in brain health. They can be found in whole grains, eggs, and leafy greens.

Nutrition drinks

Nutrition drinks are a helping hand, especially with hectic schedules. They are easily available in the market. For example: Complan is a nutrition drink that is scientifically designed with 34 essential vital nutrients including vitamins, minerals and 100% milk protein, supporting overall growth and development.

It also contains 63% more protein than other nutrition drinks. Complan is clinically proven to support 2x faster growth and also supports memory and concentration.

The foundation of a child's diet should be based on whole, nutrient-dense food. Encouraging healthy eating habits from a young age will not only support their physical growth, but also their cognitive development, helping them to perform better in school and daily activities.

Disclaimer: The views expressed in the blog content are independent and unbiased views of solely the blogger. This is a part of the public awareness initiative supported by Complan.

Ancient grains are in the spotlight because of their health benefits. Once, they were staples in the Indian traditional diet, but rice took over after the 1950s, and these grains got pushed to the background. Ragi is one such superfood that has come back. Known as finger millet, it is a rich source of good carbs and is usually consumed in its pure or crushed form. It has high nutritional value because of which it is at the top of food grains. As it is gluten-free, it is suitable for consumption by those who are lactose and gluten intolerant.

It is a staple food in South India, especially Karnataka. Despite its nutritive value, this grain still remains absent from diets except in South India. If you are unaware of the health benefits of Ragi, then you should read on to know more about this superfood.

6 Health Benefits of Ragi

1. Helps Control Diabetes – Ragi’s seed coat is rich in dietary fibers and polyphenols compared to wheat, maize, or rice. It has a low glycemic index that not only reduces food cravings but it also maintains digestive pace. As a result, blood sugar levels remain in control and in a safe range. Nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood, who is based in Bangalore, recommends including ragi for breakfast or lunch for an all-day-fit-gut.

2. Rich in Calcium – Ragi flour is one of the best sources of Calcium compared to other grain. Calcium is essential for strong bones and good teeth. Optimum quantities of Calcium keep osteoporosis away. 50 gms of Ragi has 172 mg of Calcium.

3. Reverses Skin Aging – This ancient grain contains essential amino acids such as Lysine and methionine, which prevent sagging, fine lines and wrinkles. It contains naturally occurring Vitamin D, the sun vitamin, essential for the absorption of Calcium, and Niacin, vitamin B3, essential for healthy skin.

4. Improves Haemoglobin – Ragi is rich in natural iron and is excellent for those suffering from anaemia. The grain is rich in Thiamine or vitamin B1, which helps the body produce red blood cells. It also helps in the formation of ATP, used by the body for energy. Ragi sprouts have increased levels of vitamin C and help iron to be easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Ragi muddle or ragi dosa is an excellent breakfast or lunch which helps diabetics, anaemias and those with bone problems.

5. Helps Weight Loss – The high quantity of dietary fiber in ragi keeps you full for longer. Benefits of ragi for weight loss are amazing. When you don’t feel hungry, you eat less and hence lose weight. Ragi activates insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels. But it is best had in the morning or lunch so that it keeps you full for a long time. You can have a light dinner, and this will keep up your diet.

6. Relaxing Body – Including ragi in your regular diet helps deal with insomnia, depression, and anxiety because of the presence of antioxidants in the grain. It contains amino acids and tryptophan, which have the properties of natural relaxants. Consuming ragi has also proved to be beneficial in migraines, as study reports.

Ragi, whether eaten as whole grain or in the form of flour, is rich in proteins, high fiber, antioxidants, magnesium, iron and Calcium. This nutrition-dense and fiber-dense ancient grain provide a multitude of benefits. Apart from the above-mentioned benefits, it is good for the heart, as it is a rich source of magnesium. Project Hair care- Importance of Nutrients for hair growth

Hello,

I have created a series of hair care in the month of January. In my first post, I have mentioned the structure of hair, and what I am going to cover in this series. Its name was  Let's talk about hair.  My second post was about causes of hair fall. In that post, I tried to cover all those scenarios which cause hair fall or hair loss. That post was named with What are the causes of hair fall?

Hair fall occurs due to many reasons and without working on those reasons we keep on finding the remedies, so before adopting any remedy whether it is a natural way or a cosmetic way, we need to improve our diet and should understand the cause of hair fall.

“If your hair is falling out at the roots, often something is going wrong in your body or in your life situation,” Dr. Bergfeld says

Here are some nutrients required by your hair111 and deficiency of them will cause hair fall.

1. Vitamin A: It is one of the most important nutrients for hair growth. It is responsible for producing natural oil which moisturizes the scalp, known as sebum. Sebum helps in keeping the scalp healthy, and restrict dandruff or dryness. Vitamin A is mostly present in yellow or Orange colour fruits and vegetables.

2. Vitamin C: This vitamin needs your attention because it plays vital role in hair growth. In most of the cases, vitamin C is the root cause of hair loss/hair fall. It is responsible for the production of Collagen which is a building block of hair. It is required to have vitamin C daily as it protects hair from premature greying, split ends, and weak structure.

3. Iron: Deficiency of iron is directly related to hair loss. Our hair follicles needs iron for growth and if the body doesn't get the enough amount of iron then hair start shedding off and will weak your hair follicles.

4. Protein: Hair are made up of protein fibres that means for good volume of hair, high protein diet is required. Less protein means less hair, Low protein diet leads to hair fall, split ends, weak structure which may lead to baldness.

5 B-Vitamin: B-vitamin is Biotin, it also plays a vital role in hair growth. Deficiency of it causes to hair fall. Biotin also helps in the production of keratin which is another type of fibrous protein. Biotin is also considered as the food of the hair.

Benefits of Water for hair

Water is the most essential component required by our body, as it helps in the smooth functioning of our body . Even our hair strand contains water so the required amount of water is needed by hair for staying healthy.  It is used for  hydration which results improved digestive system, good skin, and healthy hair. It is required to drink 2 to 3 litres of water for better absorption of nutrients and removal of toxins. If intake of high protein diet, then it is required to drink plenty of water for its digestion.

Stay connected with hair care series for remedies in the next post.

Project Hare Care - What are the causes of hair fall?

Hair fall is the common problem among people and there are many reasons behind it. Normally we shed our hair but if you find it more than usual than it's a matter of concern. I have listed few causes:

1. Hereditary : Observe the pattern of hair loss in your family if it is in the same pattern then this is a genetic cause of hair loss. It starts with thinning of hair and start falling in a pattern similar to your siblings or parents.

2. Stressful Life: Lifestyle is one of the major causes of hair fall. It all depends on the type of sleep and duration of sleep. Stress is not that how much burden you have, it all depends on what's your attitude of taking your work.

3. Pregnancy: This is also a major cause when women face hair fall but this is only for some period. Pregnancy brings hormonal change in the body  which needs time to adjust, due to this reason women faced hair fall problem.

4. Less nutritious food: Your skin and hair are like the mirror of your food. They both will react same as the quality of your food.  Nutritious food is necessary for all, so everybody has to focus on it. Junk food and the bad habit of taking food is very hazardous to hair and skin.

5. Hairstyle : Nowadays women and men, both are very conscious  for their hairstyle, so they opt different hairstyle and use electronic products on hair which initially worsen the quality of hair and then be the reason of hair fall.

6. PCOS: It is a common hormonal disorder which affects the menstrual cycle and increases the chances of infertility.  PCOS is also a reason of major hair fall but increases facial hair and body hair. For more details you can also read my post on PCOS .

7. Lack of cleanliness: Washing your hair is the common hygiene which you maintain for heathy hair. If you wash your hair too frequently or improper washing then it will also be a reason of hair fall. Over washing will imbalance pH balance of hair which should be 4.5 to 5.5.

8. Weak Immune system: Week immune system is the cause of every disease, so it also affects your hair and resultant hair loss. Immune system needs a balanced diet which contains vitamins, protein, carbohydrate, iron, minerals etc.

9. Major Surgery: If there is any patient who has gone through a major surgery then also he/she can face the hair fall problem.

Stay connected to the series of hair care. In the next post we will discuss the remedies of hairfall. In previous post we have discussed the basic introduction of hair.
